Keeping Your Child's Car Seat Safe
Finding the perfect car seat for your child doesn't usually happen overnight. You will notice just how many car seats there are out there, and how many different brands and options to choose from. Although it may be hard to find the perfect car seat right away, it is important to choose a car seat that is safe. Remember, that is the number one reason you're getting a car seat for your child. To keep up with your child's car seat safety, here are a few tips!
Choosing the proper car seat for your child
Ensure that the car seat you are purchasing is intended for the age group of your child. Even if the seat is for your child's age group, measure your child before purchasing to ensure that he or she will fit in the seat. When in doubt, buy a seat that fits the size of your child even if it is slightly outside your child's age group. If you are considering a seat that converts into a carrier or a stroller, think about your daily routine in terms of the wear and tear that the seat will get outside the car. If you expect to take the stroller/carrier outdoors, up and down stairs, or in extreme weather, you may consider buying a non-convertible car seat. Whenever possible purchase a child car seat with a five-point harness, head impact protection, and a place to string the seatbelt through. All of these considerations will ensure that your child has the best protection possible in the event of a collision.
Placing the child and the seat correctly
While every car, seat, and age group is different, there are a few general rules to keep in mind. Child car seats should always be placed in the back seat and, for as long as possible, face away from the windshield to ensure that a deployed airbag or a windshield breaking during a crash does not injure the child. Buckles and clasps should click easily into place and straps should fit comfortably but snugly.
Performing regular car seat maintenance
Make sure to get your child car seat inspected when you first install it and on a regular basis as often as once a year. Local highway patrol and police stations regularly host inspection days and there are established Child Passenger Safety Inspection Stations throughout the country. Officials at inspection sites will show you how to properly install the seat and share tips for your child's age group. If your child car seat has been in an accident or there are any cracks present, replace the seat. Similar to bicycle helmets, car seats that have structural damage do not work correctly or safely in a crash. Finally, regularly check manufacturer recalls and keep track of your car seat's expiration date. Every child car seat has an expiration date and if you are unsure do not use a seat that is older than 6 years old.
Making sure your child's car seat is safe from the day you buy it until you buy a new one is very important. Make sure it fits them, is installed properly, and that you face them the right way! These will all help protect your little one.
